In 1987, a trio known as De La Soul formed from Long Island, NY roots and changed the landscape of hip-hop as we knew it. Now, for over 20 years they have rocked us with their De La songs full of inscrutable samplings, whimsically irreverent lyrics, social commentary, light rhythm and laid back rhymes. They have gained respect within and outside the hip hop community with their contributions to rap, as well as jazz, funk, soul and alternative genres. Not only are their musical innovations acclaimed and respected worldwide, but they paved a path for many alternative rap groups to come after them.
De La Soul formed while the trio – Kelvin Mercer (Posdnous, Plug One, Plug Wonder Why, Mercenary), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Plug Two, Dave), and Vincent Mason (P.A. Pasemaster Mase,Plug Three, Maseo) – attended high school in the late 1980’s. As a group their stage names reflected the same whimsy they brought to their rhymes. Through backward spelling of Mercer’s nickname as a high school DJ “Sound-Sop” became Posdnous and Trugoy was derived from Jolicoeur’s favorite food –yogurt. Mason noted in an early interview that Pasemaster was the DJ and Mase wasn’t simply a nickname, but an acronym for “Making A Soul Effort”. The group soon caught the attention of producer Paul “Prince Paul” Huston (of local rap group Stetsasonic) with a demo tape of the song “Plug Tunin’”. He played the tape colleagues on New York’s rap scene, and soon De La Soul signed with Tommy Boy…(more @ yoshis.com)

An influential alternative rap quartet from South Central Los Angeles, the Pharcyde was formed by MCs/producers Tre “Slimkid” Hardson, Imani Wilcox, and Romye “Booty Brown” Robinson. Hardson, Wilcox, and Robinson were all dancers and choreographers who met on the L.A. underground club circuit in the late ’80s, worked together for a while, and served a stint as dancers on In Living Color. Under the tutelage of Reggie Andrews, a local high-school music teacher, the group learned about the music industry and the process of recording an album. They landed a deal with Delicious Vinyl in 1991, and a year later released their eccentric debut album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, which went gold. After support slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza’s second stage in 1994, the group released its second album, Labcabincalifornia, which was calmer than their first but no less warped. After a five-year break which saw little action, the Pharcyde returned in late 2000 with their third album, Plain Rap.

Born with music in their veins, both Jack Davey and Brook D’Leau were products of the growing music video age that allowed consumers to visualize what they were listening to. By way of St. Louis, MO, Jack Davey was exposed to Classic Jazz and hints of Late 70’s Jazz Fusion before being introduced to 80’s R&B and the new sound of Hip Hop Music. By the time she relocated to Los Angeles at the tender age of 8, her musical tastes and dreams of performing landed her in an all-girl singing group that was signed to MCA records in the early 90’s. Although this group never released any new material, the studio and songwriting experience prepared Jack for what was to come. Los Angeles born partner Brook D’leau was surrounded by the New Wave& Pop Rock sound by way of Prince, Talking Heads, and The Police. The youngster began to bang out interestingly melodic instrumental tracks in his father’s home studio after school and simply for fun, but never thought of taking a career in music seriously. Through their youth it was evident that music would change their futures, and once introduced by a mutual friend in high school the two young musical masterminds decided to put plans for a partnership into motion.
