Shafiq Husayn interview with Straight No Chaser magazine 2009 by amarofpatel

Shafiq Husayn, one third of the mighty Sa-Ra, is striking out on the solo path with his debut album ‘Shafiq’ En A-Free-Ka’.

This album, like much of Sa-Ra’s material, mixes sexuality with spirituality and grit to intoxicating effect. Om’Mas, Shafiq and Taz have practically copyrighted that formula: the amped up drums, pimped out vocals and freaky analogue synths, tempered by buttersoft melodies.

But this is no group off-cut masquerading as a solo record. Shafiq is his own man and serious about revealing his personal thoughts and emotions through his music. Play the following interview to find out more.
