Q: How important is it for you to be knowledgeable about a record, from its liner notes to the logistics of its production?
I need it for my personal satisfaction—I really want to know. I got a lot of good answers from Steve Ett’s assistant engineer for [Public Enemy’s] Nation of Millions. With a group like Public Enemy, there’s so many gods to serve that the one area that I wanted know about—music production—often gets overlooked. So you never get a chance to ask, what is the true story behind “Rebel Without a Pause”? Chuck will never tell me the story of how that shit went down, and that is one of the greatest stories in hip-hop.
Q: As an avid tastemaker, do you ever get overwhelmed with the amount of music you consume in a day?
My record room consists of twelve shelves—floor to ceiling, wall to wall—but do i get overwhelmed? No. The only time I get overwhelmed is when I inherit somebody’s Serato collection. I just inherited probably the creme de la creme of Baltimore house mixes, but it’s too much for me to handle, because I hate nothing more than missing something. I’m not saying I’m going to sit there and listen to the entire six minutes of the song; I’ll probably do, like, a minute test.
