MIGHTY presents MADLIB Friday January 29, 2010 at 10:00pm
Mighty
119 Utah Street
San Francisco, California 94103
Friday, January 29th, MIGHTY is proud to present MADLIB (Stones Throw Records). The night will feature an exclusive DJ set from Madlib himself with Support from DJ SHORTKUT (Triple Threat DJs / Invisibl Skratch Piklz / Beat Junkies) & Carey Kopp (CakeMIX SF). Doors are at 10PM. Advance presales will be available through eventbrite.com.
Describing himself as a “DJ first, producer second, and rapper third”, Madlib is a Grammy nominated California based artist. He’s been dubbed one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed hip-hop producers of the last decade. His collaborations include a slew of hip hop artists such as The Alkaholiks, Mos Def, De La Soul, Talib Kweli, MF DOOM, Erykah Badu and the late J-Dilla to name a few.
Madlib started making music in the early 90’s with his group Lootpack, based out of his hometown of Oxnard, California. Through the Lootpack, Madlib caught the attention of Peanut Butter Wolf, which secured him a record deal with Stones Throw Records. Madlib’s first release, Quasimoto – The Unseen, was met with critical acclaim and named by Spin Magazine as one of the top albums of 2000. Since his first solo venture, Madlib has released several follow up albums that range with influences from hip hop, jazz, Indian to dub.
Maybe most well known for his joint work, Madlib has released several critically acclaimed collaborations. The Champion Sound album saw him teamed up with legendary producer J-Dilla under the pseudonym Jaylib. But perhaps his most successful collaboration was with MF DOOM, releasing the album Madvillainy under the moniker Madvillian. The 2004 Madvillainy album was highly anticipated, and well received, topping many critics’ year-end lists.
DJ SHORTKUT has been making his rounds for some time now. No other DJ in the world will ever be a member of the three most innovative & influential DJ crews to exist. As a member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Beat Junkies and Triple Threat DJs, Shortkut’s contributions to the DJ world greatly assisted in building the culture into what it is today. His years of musical experience and unparalleled presence in the national and international circuits exemplify his passion and dedication to a culture he helped create.
Settled in San Francisco for three years now, Carey Kopp blames his upbringing outside of Detroit for his musical obsession. Deeply influenced by the classic Motown sound and fellow Michigan hip hoppers, you can catch him spinning classic soul & funk to golden era hip-hop.

Announcement: Madlib X Strong Arm Steady
(via ST Newsletter)
Madlib has produced an album for Los Angeles rappers Strong Arm Steady (Krondon & Phil Da Agony) which is being completed this week. The album will be titled “Stoney Jackson” and features Talib Kweli, Phonte, Planet Asia, and Oh No among others. We’ll have a full announcement for this record and a digital pre-release coming soon.
Madlib is also working on an album with Guilty Simpson titled “OJ Simpson” which will be released later, after the Strong Arm Steady collab. These two albums are the newest in a long line of Madlib hip-hop collab/production, including Madvillain, Jaylib and Quasimoto.

OJ Simpson (Guilty Simpson x Madlib) - Coroner’s Music (via OKP/ST)
The charisma that Detroit’s heavy hitting MC Guilty Simpson and the Los Angeles based Beat Konducta Madlib share is undeniable. A string of songs going back to Guilty’s first appearance on wax (Jaylib’s “Strapped”) testify to a musical kinship that is rare in today’s rapper-as-an-accessory marketplace. To us, Guilty over a Madlib beat is like hearing Guru over Premier circa Daily Operation, or CL over Pete around the time they recorded “Straighten It Out.” Some times, a rapper and a producer just work well together.
The two together making OJ Simpson, Madlib (Otis Jackson) and Guilty Simpson. OJ Simpson is the name of the album. No, you won’t hear Guilty make any references to bloody gloves. No, you won’t catch Madlib driving a bronco. These are some 14 hard hitting, straight from the gutter hip hop tracks featuring Guilty’s inimitable baritone and a couple guest appearances (Elzhi, Strong Arm Steady). Some cuts by J.Rocc. And a whole bunch of attitude. This is one of our favorite projects in a while.
We’re releasing this teaser single – the title track and the needs-nothing-more-than-the-title verbal onslaight that is “Coroner’s Music” - to remind you of the hip hop you’ve missed. The album drops this fall.
