Biography of De La Soul:

In 1987, a trio known as De La Soul formed from Long Island, NY roots and changed the landscape of hip-hop as we knew it. Now, for over 20 years they have rocked us with their De La songs full of inscrutable samplings, whimsically irreverent lyrics, social commentary, light rhythm and laid back rhymes. They have gained respect within and outside the hip hop community with their contributions to rap, as well as jazz, funk, soul and alternative genres. Not only are their musical innovations acclaimed and respected worldwide, but they paved a path for many alternative rap groups to come after them.
De La Soul formed while the trio – Kelvin Mercer (Posdnous, Plug One, Plug Wonder Why, Mercenary), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Plug Two, Dave), and Vincent Mason (P.A. Pasemaster Mase,Plug Three, Maseo) – attended high school in the late 1980’s. As a group their stage names reflected the same whimsy they brought to their rhymes. Through backward spelling of Mercer’s nickname as a high school DJ “Sound-Sop” became Posdnous and Trugoy was derived from Jolicoeur’s favorite food –yogurt. Mason noted in an early interview that Pasemaster was the DJ and Mase wasn’t simply a nickname, but an acronym for “Making A Soul Effort”. 
The group soon caught the attention of producer Paul “Prince Paul” Huston (of local rap group Stetsasonic) with a demo tape of the song “Plug Tunin’”. He played the tape colleagues on New York’s rap scene, and soon De La Soul signed with Tommy Boy…(more @ yoshis.com)

The night will feature an exclusive DJ set from Madlib himself with Support from DJ SHORTKUT (Triple Threat DJs / Invisibl Skratch Piklz / Beat Junkies) & Carey Kopp (CakeMIX SF). Doors are at 10PM. Describing himself as a “DJ first, producer second, and rapper third”, Madlib is a Grammy nominated California based artist. He’s been dubbed one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed hip-hop producers of the last decade. His collaborations include a slew of hip hop artists such as The Alkaholiks, Mos Def, De La Soul, Talib Kweli, MF DOOM, Erykah Badu and the late J-Dilla to name a few.
Madlib started making music in the early 90’s with his group Lootpack, based out of his hometown of Oxnard, California. Through the Lootpack, Madlib caught the attention of Peanut Butter Wolf, which secured him a record deal with Stones Throw Records. Madlib’s first release, Quasimoto – The Unseen, was met with critical acclaim and named by Spin Magazine as one of the top albums of 2000. Since his first solo venture, Madlib has released several follow up albums that range with influences from hip hop, jazz, Indian to dub.
Maybe most well known for his joint work, Madlib has released several critically acclaimed collaborations. The Champion Sound album saw him teamed up with legendary producer J-Dilla under the pseudonym Jaylib. But perhaps his most successful collaboration was with MF DOOM, releasing the album Madvillainy under the moniker Madvillian. The 2004 Madvillainy album was highly anticipated, and well received, topping many critics’ year-end lists.
DJ SHORTKUT has been making his rounds for some time now. No other DJ in the world will ever be a member of the three most innovative & influential DJ crews to exist. As a member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Beat Junkies and Triple Threat DJs, Shortkut’s contributions to the DJ world greatly assisted in building the culture into what it is today. His years of musical experience and unparalleled presence in the national and international circuits exemplify his passion and dedication to a culture he helped create.
Settled in San Francisco for three years now, Carey Kopp blames his upbringing outside of Detroit for his musical obsession. Deeply influenced by the classic Motown sound and fellow Michigan hip hoppers, you can catch him spinning classic soul & funk to golden era hip-hop.
