if you were at RTB last year, this was the song Rakim performed first… and, as far as sampling goes…
mos x coltrane x axelrod = yes lawd
this performance took place ten days before my birthday. saw variations of this at yoshi’s in oakland (as a birthday gift) with the fam and was blown away!!!
Royce and Premier - Shake This
I don’t really like this song, it has to be one of Premo’s less creative ones—the loop for “Mass Appeal” sounds better than this. Madlib and PR chose a better part of the original (David Axelrod - The Smile) to flip.
Earl Palmer: 1924 – 2008 (Video by B+) (via Vimeo)
Certified Fresh just posted something on Mitch Mitchell passing away the other day, so I thought I’d shed light on another influential drummer that passed last September. I’ll let ya’ll read up on him on you’re own time, I just want you to listen how B+ used Earl Palmer’s track from the Holy Thursday / Songs of Innocence session to accentuate how his sound defined David Axelrod’s music (as well as others). His work on this track is forever hair raising. RIP my man.
